The community leaving in Nairobi county especially on the in the informal settlements have been hit by cases of teenage pregnancies among the adolescent girls, Alcohol and substance abuse which has greatly affected the youths thus joining bad groups leading to rising cases of crime, HIV infection with adolescent girls and young women AGYWs feeling the greatest brunt.
The listed critical issues affecting the adolescent youth in slums majorly has been contributed by unemployment rate for the youths within Nairobi, poverty levels within the various households since parents have no stable sources of income to take care of the family members. Many of the adolescent girls opt for engaging in unsafe sex which poses a risk to their lives in search of getting their means of survival and raising finances to even support their parents in buying some necessities like sanitary towels among other household items. Adolescent young men whom after dropping out of school become idle within the community thus joining bad groups known as ‘’Gaza Gang’’ which recruit adolescent youth and young adults in and out of school to terrorizes the community members with rape, robbery and violence among other harmful acts.
FCC aims to utilize the power football and other sports as a tool to identify and mobilize vulnerable adolescent girls and young women (AGYWs) and other youth to create safe spaces to engage them in both football and non-football activities, deliver essential training, and foster empowerment with aim to:
- To reduce cases of teen pregnancies and HIV and STI infections.
- Promote secondary abstinence or have protected sexual intercourse and learning one’s HIV status.
- To reduce alcohol, drugs, and substance abuse in the community.
- To prevent child trafficking, gender-based violence, as well as violence against children in informal settlements in Nairobi County.
