Education
Fortune Community Centre offers education under its project Fortune Learners.
The project opened its door in January 2014 to Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in Kayole and the surrounding informal settlement in Nairobi County with the goal of providing education and nutrition to ensure they realize their full potential.
To date the project has graduated 145 learners who have sat for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and successfully transited to secondary schools where 70 have sat for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 64 still in Secondary school with only 6 learners joining vocational course and 5 dropping out of school. Another 23 learners have joined junior Secondary School in the past two years.
The current population stands at 246 learners with 128 boys and 118 girls aged 3- 13 years.
Since 2003, Kenya’s constitution guarantees every child the right to free basic education. This was laudable goal has brought many positive changes, but also its share of challenges. The sudden increase in enrolment put a strain on the school infrastructure, teacher availability and resources. Some areas have also faced overcrowded classrooms, insufficient teaching materials and teacher shortages.
Lack of resources has forced most schools to ask parents to pay for desks, admission fees, examinations, uniforms and to support teachers not on government payroll. This burden has fallen heaviest on families from poor backgrounds (widows, single mothers, jobless families and child headed households), often keeping their children out of school.
Fortune believes education is the primary path to escape the trap of poverty and we strive to provide kids with the opportunity to get the education they deserve.
